Shelby County Local Cost Share Programs

These agriculture programs are offered to Shelby County residents that have a Farm Number.  Most programs offer 50% cost share of completed practice with a maximum of $1000 per year per program.  The Cover Crop program is $20 per acre up to 50 acres, not to exceed $1,000 per landowner.  The Pasture and Hay Weed Management (Spray) program is $20 per acre up to 50 acres, not to exceed $1,000 per landowner.  The Backyard Conservation program is 50% cost share of completed practice with a maximum of $500 per household per year.  The Hoop Barn is 50% of the receipts not to exceed $2,500 reimbursement and must be utilized for hay storage, livestock use, or equipment needed for hay or livestock.

Soil test results are required for Pasture & Hay Seed/Fertilizer and the Lime/Fertilizer program.

Hoop Barn must be completely installed, pictures of the project turned in with the application, and spot checked before any reimbursement is released to the applicant.  This is a first come, first serve application to the first 20 completed Hoop Barn applications.

A copy of paid receipts are required.  Pictures of the completed program are encouraged.

Each program is subject to a spot check.

If filed under the lease name, a copy of the Farm Service Agency 578 report will have to be attached to the application.

Backyard Conservation

This program is to be approved first before the project can start.  Limit to one application per household.  Reimbursement of $500 maximum.  The reimbursement for Native Tree planting is only for local nurseries, not retail stores.

Exclusion Fence

This program is designed to fence livestock from water (pond, creek, stream, lake), with plans to install a livestock waterer.  Cost share includes fence, post, gate, brace, and insulators/staples, all must be durable and of high quality.  Minimum of 5 strands of fence with post spaced adequately.  The fence should be installed a minimum of 20 feet away from the waterline and embankment for the protection of the embankment and vegetation as well as safety concerns when possible.  When installing, consider livestock management and adaptive grazing strategies, access to water facilities, and wildlife deterrence or passage.  Plan, design, and construct this practice to comply with all Federal, State, and local regulations.  ​To receive the reimbursement, the fence must be completely installed and spot checked.

Heavy Use Area

This area should be installed to design and specifications.  Rock, concrete, and geotextile fabric in gateways are also eligible for cost share.  Ag lime or class I sand can be used as a finish grade.

Hoop Barn

Hoop barn will be utilized for hay storage, livestock use, or equipment needed for hay or livestock.  Landowner is responsible for insurance coverage.  The District is not responsible for insurance or any damage.  This cost share does not include the purchase of construction, concrete, or drilling equipment.  Landowner can also use CAIP funding as long as the landowner has 25% invested in it after the reimbursements.
Limit is 20 barns for reimbursement.
To receive reimbursement, the barn must be completely installed, pictures of the project turned in with the application, and a spot check.

Lime

Livestock Water

The livestock water tank is to be installed to design and specifications.  Payment includes tank, pipe, and labor.  Limit one water tank installation per year.

This program is help with controlling weeds in pasture and hay fields.  This program does not include yards or fence lines.

Sinkhole Repair

The repair should meet guidelines with geotextile fabric and rock.  Maps showing location of the sinkhole is required.

Wildlife Pollinator Habitat

This program must be utilized to use multiple native pollinating seeds or plants to expand or start a pollinator garden or habitat.  This program includes herbicide treatment, native grasses and native pollinators, does not include sunflower fields.
